Cape Town and Surroundings
Cape Town, The Mother
City justifies at least a visit of 4 days as it has so much to offer. There
is much to do and to see… a day doing a tour around the Cape Peninsula visiting
the highlights of Cape Point, Hout Bay and seal island, the quaint naval village
of Simonstown and Boulders Penguin Colony, world famous Kirstenbosch Botanical
Gardens and the oldest wine estate, Groot Constantia… a day spent exploring
the interesting shops and modern shopping malls… a day spent visiting the
winelands home to hundreds of excellent wine estates… a day visiting Robben
Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for much of his life… a day out
along the coast to see the Southern Right Whales during the season of June
to November… a day out to see the Spring Flowers during the season of August
and September… and much, much more. Why not stay in the Winelands area for
a few nights - also a wonderful area a short drive from central Cape Town
yet away from the hustle and bustle. You can either hire a car and do it yourself
or take a selection of day tours.
Accommodation starts
from around US$ 35.00 per person per night bed and breakfast. Can be visited
all year (best time is February to April and September to November although
winter is mild, is quiet from a visitor's point, which makes for easy and
relaxed surroundings.
Garden Route
South Africa's lakes district…
a beautiful stretch of our country that lies along the East Coast between
Mossel Bay and just beyond Plettenberg Bay. One should spend at least 3 days
in this area to be able to see all the beauty of long beaches, hidden lagoons,
the forests, interesting villages and towns and to visit a host of fine eateries.
Knysna is the heart of the Garden Route and is central to - Oudtshoorn the
ostrich capital… Plettenberg Bay the home of South Africa's rich and famous…
a number of beautiful lakes… beaches for swimming, sun tanning and surfing…
Knysna itself, a picturesque village with its host of interesting restaurants
and home to the Knysna oyster… Mossel Bay where the historical Diaz Museum
and Post Office Tree is located.
The Garden Route can
either be visited as a self drive (about a 5-hour drive from Cape Town), as
a hosted fly-in package or as escorted tour. Accommodation starts from around
US$ 30.00 per person per night bed and breakfast.
The Great African Safari
Coming to Southern Africa
is not complete without doing an African Safari. Our main safari area is centered
around the Kruger National Park located on the North Eastern border of South
Africa. The Kruger National Park is a large Park with a host of rest camps
spread throughout the Park where one can overnight on either a self-catering
basis or take one's meals in the rest camp restaurants. Game viewing is done
by self driving around on the well marked roads networking the Park, or by
escorted tours conducted by various tour operators and by the Park's rangers
- vehicles are closed i.e.: VW microbuses or coach tours. The
real safari is done by visiting a Private Game Reserve. These border the Kruger
National Park and offer a range of 5-star accommodation be in tents or stunning
individual chalets. Typically a visit to a Private Game Reserve includes your
luxurious accommodation, a morning and late afternoon game drive going into
the evening using a spotlight to look for the nocturnal wildlife - these drives
are in open 4-wheel drive vehicles accompanied by professional rangers / naturalists
and their trackers. Most offer bush walks under guidance of an armed ranger,
some offer health treatments and all include three meals per day; all coffees
and teas plus some include sundowner drinks while on the evening game drive.
Going on safari must be done over a minimum of 3 days either visiting the
Kruger National Park or one of the Private Game Reserves. If one can, 4 days
certainly offers the ideal length of visit especially when one has traveled
so far.
A 2-night Kruger National Park safari starts from US$ 360.00 per person
sharing as an escorted tour ex Johannesburg including breakfast and dinner
plus drives around the Park.
A 2-night fly-in ex Johannesburg to a
Private Game Reserve starts from US$ 680.00 per person sharing including return
flights from Johannesburg, luxury accommodation, all meals plus two game viewing
activities each day (and bush walks on request).
A 4-day self drive adventure to the Kruger National Park starts from US$ 300.00
per person sharing a compact rental car driving from Johannesburg to the Park
return and 3 nights chalet accommodation in the Park.
Either before or after one's safari one can also spend a few extra days exploring the surrounding area of Pilgrim's Rest, the whole village is a national monument dedicated to the old gold mining days. See the natural beauty of Bourkes Luck Potholes, God's Window, Mac Mac Falls and explore interesting craft shops located in all the small villages scattered through the area. If time permits 3 days in the area makes for an interesting visit.
Victoria Falls Getaway
Should time allow a visit
to one of the natural wonders of the world, Victoria Falls is a must. The
small town of Victoria Falls serves this magnificent sight, of the smoke that
thunders. The best way to visit the Victoria Falls is to take a fly-in package
from Johannesburg - 2 nights is just fine for a visit. Typically one flies
out of Johannesburg on a scheduled flight arriving in Victoria Falls in the
early afternoon spending 2 nights allowing for a full day to see the Falls,
visit one of Africa's most interesting craft markets, do a sunset cruise along
the Zambezi River, see the Africa Dance Spectacular show and to enjoy high
tea at the delightful Victoria Falls Hotel.
A 2-night fly-in package
ex Johannesburg starts from US$ 415.00 per person sharing.
Wonderous Okavango
"To many the name Botswana
is synonymous with vast herds of game and whilst there is truth in this,
it is not, to those who know and understand the country, the true reason
for its compelling attraction and lasting effect on people. What then, does
draw visitors in ever-increasing numbers to this evocative land? The
answer can be summed up in one word - wilderness. Wilderness is found in
the immensity of flawless skies that arch from horizon to horizon or in
the deafening silence in the still of an ink-black night when, as the bushmen
themselves proclaim, it is possible to hear the stars in song. And if this
is not enough to lure the Africa enthusiast to the seductive embrace of
the Kalahari then the addition of names such as Okavango, Savute, Moremi
and Chobe completes the process."
Mike Main, author
There are a number of itineraries on offer visiting this stunning wilderness - the only way to do it in limited time is by fly-in safaris and better yet to hinge this visit to one's Victoria Falls visit. 3-Days is the minimum requirement although we would suggest at least a 4-night visit, 2 nights each at two different camps within Botswana. Prices start from US$ 1000.00 per person sharing for a 2-night fly-in safari to US$ 2250.00 per person for a 4-night fly-in safari. There are options for longer safaris.
